there are several coworking spaces in San Francisco and Seattle, where geeks get together and work. It's a way to get away from home, feel social and also network. I'd say it's not as much for networking as for providing a social work atmosphere to encourage you to work though.

Citizenspace was a famous one in San Francisco for example.

alledgedly it is meant to mean working alongside another person, but its true meaning is taken to encompass all who work say for example in a large building,or an office or as part of a team.
it is a shorten version of two words cooperative and working, co-working working in cooperation with another. regards
